From 2018 to 2021, East Bay Biosecurity brought together early-career professionals, graduate students, and other curious researchers to explore biosecurity and pandemic preparedness.

The group hosted regular events at The Berkeley REACH from 2018-2019, using a Center for Effective Altruism Community-Building Grant to send organizers to biosecurity-related conferences. In 2020, the organizing team took a break to focus on Catalyst Biosummit, and then the COVID-19 pandemic made it unwise to host an in-person meetup group. In 2021, a new organizing team hosted virtual meetups for several months.
